DVD Derek reviews dinner party games?

Recently at a dinner party with friends I was asked what I thought was the best film I had ever seen.

This reminded me of the comedy with Simon Pegg when he asked the guests at a party, what was the best film ever made and then gave his opinion. You’ve probably seen the film ‘How To Lose Friends And Alienate People’. His choice was Con Air…remember it was a comedy.

Anyway, at the dinner party, the rules had to be changed.

It is impossible to compare classic films such as ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ with ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’. And ‘It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World’ with ‘Gunga Din’.

The question wasn’t ‘what is the best film ever made’, but ‘What is your favourite film?’

Of course, this is very difficult to answer, and one that I struggle with every time the subject rears its ugly head.

Everyone had a different point of view with favourites differing enormously.

Soon the question became who is your favourite actors and actresses.

This lead on to a discussion on who was the best Australian actress.

Obviously, the lovely Cate Blanchett was cheered as was Nicole Kidman and Toni Collette. But one guest (I assumed to be Simon Pegg in disguise) asked us if we had seen the ING advert on TV…what a bloody philistine.

He said he had seen her last three films and was sure she was going to be the next star for Australia. He was talking about Isla Fisher.

I’ve got to say, I have seen her last three films and totally agreed with him – Isla was a star.

Isa proves comedies are harder to play but can be thoroughly enjoyable. So, Isa Fisher was added to Australia’s best actresses by the dinner party guests.

There were many others proposed but we had to restrict the number to under twenty. At your next party or BBQ play the game and see how many you can name. It’s not easy – and be prepared to be shouted down at times.

Have fun and enjoy yourselves.
