Jessica Hart – new Myer’s girl

Jennifer Hawkins has been the face of department store Myer for several years, but now she has a companion in the fashion ambassador business – Melbourne-raised, New York-based model Jessica Hart, who was recently signed on as the face of Myer’s popular diffusion line, Wayne by Wayner Cooper.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s Myer summer fashion launch in Sydney, Hart said she was “over the moon” to be chosen to represent the department store alongside the former Miss Universe.

“It’s a one-year contract to start off with and we’ll see what happens after that, but I am so excited to be involved,” Hart said.

In the past year or so Hart has become something of a street-style icon, photographed walking or cycling around New York wearing her signature mix of rock ‘n’ roll leather and indie style.

So it makes sense that Myer has employed Hart to represent its more youth-oriented labels and appeal to the 20-something sector of its buying demographic.

While fashion journalists can easily become cynical about model spokespeople trotting out the company line, Hart sounds genuinely enthusiastic when she talks up the new season trends.

There’s Modern Military – think khakis and animal print. There’s Cosmetic Bloom – pretty pinks and girly ruffles. And then there’s Nautical, with Breton stripes and navy, black and white colour combinations.

“Being a typical Melbourne girl, though, I’d probably pair the pretty pink dresses with a black leather jacket and motorcycle boots,” Hart said.

There’s no rest for the beautiful, as the gap-toothed model flies out of Sydney tomorrow morning bound for Mexico and a fashion shoot with a German magazine.

Next stop Sweden and a campaign for Swedish chainstore H&M, which Hart has been representing for two years.

Then it’s back to New York for some rest and relaxation.

“I think by then I’m definitely going to need it,” she said.
