Speilberg is set for Golden Globe with Lincoln

Steven Spielberg is the frontrunner for next year’s Golden Globes Awards after receiving seven nominations for Lincoln.

Daniel Day Lewis and Sally Field are shortlisted for acting prizes for their performances as President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, while Spielberg is up for Best Director and the film itself is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Lincoln’s closest rivals are Ben Affleck’s political thriller Argo and Quentin Tarantino’s western Django Unchained; both films will compete for five prizes, including the Best Motion Picture – drama gong against Lincoln.

The annual Golden Globes Awards, voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, distinguish themselves from the Oscars by recognising drama films separately from more lighthearted movies. In the Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy Category, Les Misérables will compete against golden oldies hit Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and acclaimed novel adaptation Silver Linings Playbook.

As expected, Anne Hathaway earns a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her scene-stealing performance in Les Misérables. Meanwhile, other actors in contention for trophies include Leonardo DiCaprio for Django Unchained, Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook and Nicole Kidman for The Paperboy. Alongside Daniel Day Lewis, several other British thesps get recognised for turns on the big screen, including Helen Mirren for Hitchcock, Maggie Smith for Quartet and Judi Dench for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Last month, it was announced that Jodie Foster will be the recipient of the Cecil B De Mille award for lifetime achievement. Next year’s Golden Globes take place in LA on January 13, 2013, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, both nominees in the TV comedy actress category.
