Motocross rider dies during world record practice

A 19-year-old motocross rider has died after attempting to make a 90m jump while training.

MotocrossTyrone Gilks was training at Maitland Showground when he crashed at full speed into the front of a landing ramp.

He suffered critical chest injuries and passed away during surgery at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

He had been practicing for a world-record jump at the Maitland Bike and Hot Rod Show on Saturday night in Maitland.

He wrote on his Facebook page on Monday: “I’m attempting to break the current World’s Longest ramp to dirt jump on a 250cc two stroke of 310ft.”

A television crew captured the accident which will be used by police in their investigations.

It’s reported that Gilks said he was ‘going for it’ in fifth gear moments before the crash.
