Chipmunk takes a smoko on the beach

Chipmunks usually enjoy nuts, fruit and maybe the odd insect – but this particular critter prefers to smoke cigarettes it seems.

The squirrel-like creature was snapped by holidaymaker Joanne Evans, 29, on Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, at the resort of Costa Calma.

Joanne, a civilian police worker, who was on holiday with boyfriend Jon Nunn, 31, said: ‘We were just leaving the beach when the chipmunk popped up over the beach wall with the cigarette in its mouth.

‘It was such an odd sight that I got my camera out and took a photo. It just sat there for a short while and then ran off into a bush.’

Joanne, of Urmston, Manchester, said the chipmunks were a common sight around the beach areas on the island – but not usually attached to a cigarette.

Their usual diet consists of grain, nuts, fruit, berries, birds’ eggs, small frogs, fungi, worms, insects and on occasions small mammals like young mice.
