Poms win nail-biting World Cup Darts final

The 2012 World Cup Darts championship was won by England in a nail-biting finish against Australia, in Hamburg, Germany.

The game shouldn’t have even gone into the doubles match as Phil Taylor averaged 107 against Simon Whitlock. It was a mammoth game as Taylor won 7-6. Whitlock just wouldn’t let him out of his reach.

Nicholson then played World Champion Adrian Lewis. Lewis was throwing great darts and at one point, Nicholson was only averaging 68. But Lewis looked tired and Nicholson capitalised and won very convincingly.

Australia steamed into the doubles match and made hard work of their victory. Phil Taylor was carrying the England team as Lewis failed deliver.

Australia won 7-3 which took the final into a sudden death leg. Nearest the bull goes first, which Taylor got after a few throws with Whitlock.

It was very tense with both countires ending up on 56. With all players missing their doubles, it took Adrian Lewis (who had played poorly) who smacked in a double 5.

Nicholson didn’t even shake his opponentsĀ hands properly at the end of the match. Lewis did have words with him on the stage during the medals ceremony.

Nicholson acted like a petulant child, which is very un-Australian…maybe that’s because he is from the north of England.

Simon Whitlock was and is the ultimate professional who promised that they’d ‘do one better next year’.

A cracking final full of tension and excitement, and Whitlock becomes more likeable everytime he plays. Nicholson did act like a petulant child, but 3 of the 4 people on the oche were from the North of England so don’t use such pathetic reasoning to try to justify it. Both Taylor and Lewis were incredibly humble in the win and acknowledged the brilliance of Whitlock like the professionals they are. The Australian team had it there for the taking and choked. Nicholson isn’t used to being in a position to win a major event like this and the situation got the better of him. He will learn from it, in the same way Ponting, Tomic and countless other ‘petulant’ Australian sportsmen have done.
